Straight (and confidential) Talk about Using Independent Contractors
What risks do you need to assess before deciding to use independent contractors? Many of our members resort to second-tier subcontractors on their projects. What must you do to comply with current laws regarding independent contractors? If you do not comply, what is your risk? At this event on Sept. 25th at the law offices of Lerch Early & Brewer in Bethesda, members will not only hear current information but can also ask confidential questions about their operations to assess the risk they are taking.

Robots and Artificial Intelligence
An interesting
article from Architect Magazine shows how robots are being used to cut manhours on construction projects.  These and other AI issues will be addressed at the joint ASAMW/CFMA event at the Tower Club in Tysons Corner on Tuesday, Sept. 10th. Members are garnering their resources to show you from their perspective, how AI is affecting their business in areas such as billing, contract review, project management, and more.  Click here for more information, and to register for the AI Event.

Who Pays
We are doing informal research into who pays for the billing, project management, or other software you use on a job. Please reply to this email with the GCs you work for who do NOT charge you for Textura, GC Pay, or other software required on the project. What clauses do you see that cover this? Some are seeing clauses stating that the subcontractor is required to pay for any software required without stating what it is and the cost. Members are countering this practice by putting in their proposal that the price does NOT include costs for any software that they are not aware of.

Economy
In our region commercial real estate activity rose slightly in the last few weeks according to the July Federal Reserve Beige Book. It seems as companies downsize they are looking for more Class A space offering commercial space upgrade opportunities for contractors. Multi-family absorption is strong. It was recently reported that the $420 million Oaklawn Land Bay A data center in Leesburg, Virginia is one of the largest in the nation.

Non-members Should Read This

Golf Sponsorships are Available
Not a golfer? Another way you can gain exposure to your clients and prospective clients is with a golf sponsorship at the Sept. 5th Golf Tournament at Stonewall Golf Club. Reply to this email if you are interested and we will get you the information you need.  A few openings are still available for players too.

Remember Oct. 1st – the Scheduling Summit
Scheduling challenges will be discussed at the upcoming ASAMW event on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Building Success Together: A Summit for General Contractors & Subcontractors at the Bethesda North Marriott. What are your thoughts? Last year an event similar to this one was our most well-attended event, bringing together GCs and Subcontractors for important discussions. We expect to see all the GC Partners, as well as members who wish to discuss strategies to accomplish fairness. Click here for more information and to register.
