Executive Director's Report

Technology -  Tuesday’s virtual conference on technology presented some interesting options, but also raised questions.  Subcontractors must adapt to the GC’s technology; be it Bluebeam, Procore, Aconex, I-beam or other.  Are your Project Managers and Foremen trained to properly utilize these systems and provide the needed reports?  What is your suggestion?

We are extremely thankful to the GC Partners who presented the technology options for subcontractors and offered suggestions on how to best utilize the system to ensure prompt payment, proper scheduling and getting paid for change orders.  This program was spearheaded by Don Free with Forrester Construction, with other presenters including Moez Jaffer, Grunley; Jaime Escudero, Foulger-Pratt; Eric Wayne and Wie Loon Ooi, Avalon Bay; Michael Doughton, Donohoe and Eric Impraim, Forrester Construction, who provided excellent technical assistance.

Mark Drury Wrote a Valuable Article for ASA – Shapiro & Duncan’s Mark Drury wrote this article about survival in a COVID19 era.  He mentions:

  • First Things First – Throw Out the Old and Pivot
  • Double-Down on Core Strengths
  • Delineate Essential from Non-Essential
  • Lead with Compassion
  • Don’t Mourn the Past – Focus on New Opportunities Ahead

Warning: What Does Your Subcontract Say About COVID19 –  A member warns of subcontract clauses that shift the risk and liability of any pandemic related delay or impact of supplying material, providing manpower and finishing on time onto the subcontractor even if the GC is allowed relief in the prime contract.  Be sure to read your subcontract carefully and review the owner’s contract with the GC.

Massachusetts has a COVID Bill.  What Can We Expect? – Legislation in Massachusetts will protect construction contractors and subcontractors for “suit and civil liability for any damages allegedly related to construction delays. . .” caused by COVID-19.  We will see if similar legislation is offered in Maryland, Virginia or DC.  Click here to read the bill.

Have YOU paid your Dues?  We are at a crossroads in the construction industry.  Your participation in needed change will determine if Subcontractors have their rightful place at the table in determining our future.  If you believe in what we are doing, I hope you have already paid your dues for the coming year.  If you are not sure if you have paid or want to discuss your membership, just reply to this email and we will be in touch.
