SUBBYS IS ALMOST HERE! DID YOU VOTE?

The highlight of our year as a subcontractors association is the SUBBYs. Each member has a representative who is charged with voting in each of the categories for companies and individuals who exhibit the characteristics of the BEST for that particular award. You might not know the individual being considered, but your vote still counts. Read the description of the award and vote for someone with a company that you think deserves the recognition. Click here to view the 2025 Subby Nominees. Are you REGISTERED to attend? Early bird registration ends on January 31, 2025.

General contractors, including the GC Partners of ASAMW will be in attendance. As an ASAMW member you need to be represented as well. Our mission of fair construction can best be achieved by recognizing those who attempt to be as fair as possible. Click here for more information and to register.

Why not be a SUBBY Sponsor? Be a Superhero in the construction industry and sponsor the 61st annual SUBBY Awards. Click here for a list of the sponsorship opportunities.

Great Team – One highlight of the SUBBYs is the selection of the GREAT TEAM award. This is a project in which all the stakeholders (GC Project Manager, Staff, Subcontractors, Suppliers, Vendors, Designers and Consultants came together as a high performing team to produce extraordinary results. The nominees this year are:

Bridge District, The Douglass, Washington, DC (Ward 8) - HITT Contracting, Inc.
Confidential Headquarters Renovation & Expansion, Washington, DC - Balfour Beatty Construction/Gilbane Building Company Joint Venture
Hagerstown Baseball Field, Hagerstown, MD - Turner Construction
Henle Village at Georgetown University, Washington, DC - John Moriarty & Associates of VA
Osteria Mozza, Washington, DC - Winmar Construction
6th Distric Police Station, Gaithersburg, MD - Doyle Construction
Oakville Triangle, Alexandrai, VA - Bozzuto Construction
Each member was sent an email with a unique link to cast a vote for all the SUBBY awards. Please pay close attention to this vote since it means so much to your association. In a straw ballot at the SUBBY Nominee Reception on Tuesday, the top vote getters were Bridge District (HITT Contracting, Inc.) and Confidential Headquarters Renovation & Expansion (Balfour Beatty Construction/Gilbane Building Company Joint Venture)

You will be able to learn more about these interesting projects at the SUBBYS on Feb. 22nd.

SCOPE
Are you a SCOPE expert? Ameen Khouri is leading a task force including Mark Drury, Rick Freeman and a team of trade experts to dissect how scope development can lead to better projects with less surprises. They will be working over the next few weeks to develop a list of best practices and have some suggestions for each trade to make sure their interests are protected in the SCOPE document. Please reply to this email with any challenges you have in Scope development.

ADRIENNE’S PODCAST
This is another reminder to listen to Adrienne Smoot’s videos on her life as a finishing subcontractor. As mentioned last edition, Adrienne Smoot Edwards with Regeneracy, Inc. is on the ASAMW Board and active in the issue of prompt payment to subcontractors. Here are two YouTube videos that tell the story in a very articulate way.

THE MID-ATLANTIC CONSTRUCTION SAFETY CONFERENCE
Registration is now open for the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Conference on April 8, 2025, at Martins Crosswinds in Greenbelt. Sponsorship and Exhibitor opportunities are still available on the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Conference site.

PM WORKSHOP
The second session of the ASAMW Project Managers Workshop was held yesterday with noted local construction attorney, Brian Wood with Smith-Currie and Bill Rothrock with Kogok Corporation, leading the four-hour session on contracts.

Regarding contracts, we have discovered a worthwhile paper on the five steps to contract compliance from Document Crunch. Although self-serving, this paper offers excellent steps to implement in your company. The steps are risk assessment, negotiation, project team education, daily decision support and automated compliance. If you want a copy, visit their Website or reply to this email and I will send it to you.

MEMBER UPDATES
We are proud to add Carmel Partners to the impressive list of General Contractor Partners of ASAMW. Carmel is a California company with an office in DC. Come to the SUBBYs and meet the team of Carmel led by Peter Cramer, General Manager and Katherine Meyers, Development and Construction Coordinator.

ADVOCACY
DC – There was a productive meeting last week with the office of Council Member Kenyan McDuffie. ASAMW President Kimberlee Driggs and Board Member Adrienne Smoot-Edwards provided salient points for the need for legislation to protect subcontractors who complete work but are not paid.

MD – HB 451 has been introduced in the Maryland Legislature by Delegate Mary Lehman of Prince Georges County. Both ASA of Metro Washington and ASA of Baltimore will be testifying on this next Wednesday. Similar legislation was introduced in 2023, but faced a headwind from the minority contractors. If passed, this law would go a long way toward protecting your rights to payment for work completed.

VA – The Commonwealth’s Legislature is in Session and ASAMW is monitoring bills that will protect subcontractors. If you are aware of any legislation needed in Virginia to protect subcontractors, please reply to this email.
